Day one

Finally, the day has come and after the entertaining diversion of the Derby Beer Festival, it is time to pack the cars and head North to Fort William. The Great Glen Way will take us from Fort William to Inverness (74m) - with the largest section of the journey being along the shores of Loch Ness. This walk is essentially a continuation of one that we did some years back from Glasgow to Fort William (98m) known as The West Highland Way.

We will be meeting John in Fort William as he has travelled up before the rest of our band of intrepid adventurers who are from left to right: (Back Row) Darren, Pale, Mick, Dave: (Middle Row) Amanda, Amy, Nin and baby Maya, and myself kneeling in the front.

Car journeys are essentially boring so I messed about with the camera and decided to shoot some clouds through the passenger window...Pale is driving the vehicle following.

I've been looking forward to the walk for some time now and I'm keen to get there. I'm particularly looking forward to the scenery of course, but also the food and the beer - Scotland has discovered real ale in a big way in recent years!

Maya is only 17 months old but entertains us all with long and intense shouts of "Hallloooooo!!"...

The Scottish weather and the fearsome midge are the only real clouds on the horizon.

We all need a pit stop - so pull in at Tebay services in the Northern Lake District for a comfort break and a burger. I caught this duck in between mouthfuls...

Time to hit the road again.
